Cyrene Wells - Director at Large

My husband and I moved cross-country from Maine to Mount Vernon in 2016 and just plain love it here.  I’ve been a middle school teacher, a university professor, and a national consultant for reading and writing instruction. I’m especially drawn to the quirky passions of middle school students.
I wasn’t always a reader, didn’t have access to books until my family moved one summer to a town with a Carnegie Library that housed shelves of Nancy Drew.  The librarian encouraged the twelve-year-old me, listened as I retold plots, and pointed me to other shelves when I ran out of Nancy’s mysteries.  She put me onto Jules Verne, and around the world I went.  By late fall, I was completely hooked.  I’ve been a reader ever since.  I wish I could remember that Sturgis, Michigan’s librarian’s name, because she set me on a path to literacy that shaped my entire life.  Working with this board is one way of paying that librarian’s gift forward.  I believe that a library can be the heart of a community and am honored to serve with my peers to help strengthen the bond between this library and the people of Mount Vernon.

Do you want to be part of the effort to bring a new library to Mount Vernon? We are always looking for new members!
