Gavin Schmidt Video Game Campaign
Good gaming communities, like libraries, create spaces where people form social connections, build community, and have fun learning together. Gavin Schmidt was a passionate player and a cherished member of our community. He passed away unexpectedly in 2024.
The Gavin 454 collection was started by a group of community supporters who wanted to continue to support safe spaces, community mental health, and gaming together. The goal of the campaign was to create a free and welcoming gaming area within the Mount Vernon Library Commons teen room. Now that space has been created, and you’ll see teens gaming in the afternoon and early evening each day. Gavin’s gamer legacy lives on — to date more than 1,000 gamers have used the Gavin Schmidt gaming area of the library.
The significance of 454
Gavin’s father, Josh Schmidt (N64Josh), has started the tradition of reaching out to a person at 4:54 each day. Gavin’s gamertag was Gavin454, and this is a little way for us to stay connected with each other.
Ongoing support
The Mount Vernon Library Foundation has already pledged six gaming laptops, an Xbox, a PS5, and many Nintendo Switches in support of the effort. The Foundation welcomes additional financial contributions to build upon and maintain software and equipment
