City and school librarians, together with book-loving, library-loving, and librarian-loving individuals gathered at the Lincoln Theatre on Friday night, February 6 to watch the film, The Librarians, a documentary that explores the personal stories of librarians who have been forced to fight against organized groups, among them Moms for Liberty, who seek to ban and sensor books in schools and public libraries—and notably to harass and remove librarians from their positions if they refuse to succumb to threats and intimidation. A horrific story. One that needs to be heard and shared. No community, no school, no public library, no librarian is immune. The film, sponsored by the Mount Vernon Library Foundation, was free to the nearly 300 people who attended. After the credits rolled, most stayed in their seats to hear a panel of professionals from the Central Skagit Library, the King County Library, the Kentridge High School Library, Sedro-Wooley High School, and the Mount Vernon Library Commons discuss the documentary and its implications for area libraries and librarians—and importantly for vulnerable patrons in our communities who need to feel safe and supported by their librarians and the books on library shelves. A big thank you to all who attended and to those who so generously donated to defray the movie’s cost. The theater was alive with goodwill and support for librarians.
