About the Mount Vernon Library Foundation
The Mount Vernon Library Foundation offers a way for library enthusiasts to contribute financial support and advocate for the Mount Vernon Library Commons. These contributions and advocacy efforts amplify the library's impact on our community, enriching programming and expanding opportunities for everyone.
The Mount Vernon Library Foundation, a not-for-profit 501(c)3 established in 2012, is governed by a dedicated volunteer board of directors. Since its founding, the Foundation has raised over $2 million in grants, endowments, and personal donations to support the new Mount Vernon Library Commons. Additionally, it has supported existing programs, helped create new ones, enhanced the children's reading corner, and reintroduced periodicals to the library.

How the Foundation Differs From Friends & Trustees
The Mount Vernon Library Foundation and the Friends of Mount Vernon Library are often referred to interchangeably, but they are two separate nonprofit organizations with distinct roles. While both work closely together to support the library, they serve different purposes.
The Foundation is the library’s fundraising partner. Donors help the Foundation support library collections, programs, and facility upgrades each year. All contributions enhance, and do not replace, city-funded services.
The Friends are a membership-based, volunteer-driven community organization that helps spread literacy and elevate the role of the library in the community. They offer a way for individuals to donate books. The Friends also operate a book shop located in the library.
The Trustees is a five person advisory board. Trustees are appointed by the Mayor of Mount Vernon, and confirmed by vote of the City Council. Trustees advise the Library Director on library policy, finance and other important issues.
